Exotic, velvety, and extravagantly painted, Salpiglossis sinuata ‘Kew Blue’ dazzles with saturated violet-blue trumpets traced in intricate golden veining. Sometimes called Painted Tongue, this astonishing annual has an almost orchid-like quality: every flower looks hand-brushed, jewel-toned, and just a little improbable. Branching stems carry the blooms above softly textured foliage, creating an opulent splash in pots, borders, and cutting gardens.
Growing about 18–30 inches tall, ‘Kew Blue’ is dramatic without becoming enormous. Its dusky flowers are especially striking where they can be admired up close, or paired with silver foliage, creamy blooms, chartreuse accents, and soft apricots. The stems also make unusual cut flowers—just the thing when a bouquet is behaving a little too politely.
Salpiglossis performs best in mild weather, flourishing through spring and early summer in cooler climates or during the shoulder seasons where summers are hot. Give it sun to light afternoon shade, fertile well-drained soil, and regular water without sogginess. Deadhead to extend bloom, and provide support in windy sites if the stems grow tall.
