Completed in 1912, the Japanese Garden at The Huntington is one of America's oldest, most elaborate, and most gracefully matured Japanese gardens. It features a traditional 19th-century residence from the Meiji period, a gong tower, and a koi pond spanned by a moon bridge. To the south of the garden, across a zig-zag bridge, is a walled compound containing a karesansuiå garden (a rock garden or dry landscape) and a bonsai court.
Part of the philosophy behind Japanese garden design is that the color green should be dominant, to create a restful effect without bright hues. Color plays a lesser, largely seasonal role. Ornamental fruit trees, wisteria, Japanese maple, and ginkgo lend their color to the landscape of The Huntington's lovely Japanese garden.
